What Is IPTV and How Does It Work? A Simple Guide

IPTV is simply TV delivered over the internet instead of a dish or an aerial. Here is what that means in practice, and what all the words like M3U and MAG portal mean.

IPTV in one sentence

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) sends live TV channels, movies and series to your screen through your internet connection, the same way YouTube or Netflix do, but with live channels and a TV guide.

What you need

  1. A subscription from an IPTV provider. You get login details by email.
  2. A device: a Smart TV, Firestick, Android box, Apple TV, phone, computer, or a MAG or Formuler set-top box.
  3. An IPTV player app on that device (MAG and Formuler boxes have one built in).
  4. Internet of about 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 25 Mbps for 4K.

The words you will see

Xtream Codes login
The most common way to sign in: a server URL, a username and a password. You type them into the player app once.
M3U playlist
A single web link that contains your whole channel list. Some apps only accept this instead of a username and password.
EPG
Electronic Program Guide: the "what's on now and next" grid. It usually loads by itself; some apps ask for a separate EPG link.
MAG portal
MAG boxes don't use a password. The provider activates the box's MAC address (printed under the box), and you type a portal URL into the box's settings.
Connections or devices
How many screens can watch at the same time on one subscription.
VOD
Video on demand: movies and series you can start at any time.

How setup works

On most devices: install an IPTV player app, choose the Xtream Codes login, enter the three details from your email, and wait a minute for the channels and guide to load. On a MAG box: go to Settings › System settings › Servers › Portals, enter the portal URL, and restart. Our setup guides show every device step by step.

Is IPTV legal?

IPTV is a technology, like a satellite dish, and is used by many legitimate TV companies. What matters is whether the provider has the rights to the channels it sells. Choose a provider that is open about who it is, gives you a way to contact real support, and lets you test before paying. See how to choose an IPTV subscription.

IPTV vs other options

Compared with satellite, IPTV needs no dish and works on several screens, but it needs a stable internet connection. Read the full IPTV vs satellite comparison.

Common questions

Do I need a special box for IPTV?

No. Most Smart TVs, Firesticks, phones and computers can play IPTV with an app. MAG and Formuler boxes are optional.

What is the difference between M3U and Xtream Codes?

Both give you the same channels. Xtream Codes uses a server URL, username and password; M3U is one link. Use whichever your app supports.

Can I watch IPTV on more than one TV?

Yes, up to the number of connections in your plan.
