The short answer
IPTV is usually cheaper to start, needs no installation, and works on the TVs, phones and sticks you already own. Satellite does not need internet and is very stable once installed, but needs a dish, a receiver, a clear view of the sky and often a landlord's permission.
How each one works
Satellite TV sends channels from a satellite in space to a dish on your wall. A receiver box decodes them. IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) sends the same kind of channels over your internet connection to an app or a set-top box.
Comparison
| IPTV | Satellite | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | An app or a box, in 10 minutes | Dish, cable and receiver, often a technician |
| Upfront cost | Low: works on devices you own | Dish and receiver to buy |
| Needs internet | Yes, 10 Mbps+ per screen | No |
| Channels from many countries | Many regions in one subscription | Depends on which satellites your dish can see |
| Movies and series on demand | Usually included | Rarely |
| Watch on phone or in another room | Yes, on several screens | Usually only where the receiver is |
| Weather | Not affected | Heavy rain or snow can cut the signal |
| Moving house | Take it with you | Reinstall the dish |
When satellite makes more sense
- Your internet is slow or unreliable (under 10 Mbps).
- You already have a dish pointed at the satellites you need.
- You only watch a few free-to-air channels.
When IPTV makes more sense
- You rent, and can't put a dish on the wall.
- You want US, UK and European channels in one place, without paying for several packages.
- You want to watch on more than one TV, or on your phone when you travel.
- You want movies and series as well as live TV.
Picture quality
Both can show full HD, and both can show 4K on supported channels. On IPTV the quality depends on your internet: with a good connection the picture is the same as satellite, on a weak Wi-Fi signal it can drop or buffer. A cable to the TV solves most of that (see how to fix IPTV buffering).
Try before you decide
The easiest way to know if IPTV works in your home is to test it on your own TV and internet in the evening, when the line is busiest. SilyaTV has a free 36-hour trial with just your email, no card.
Common questions
Is IPTV cheaper than satellite?
Usually yes at the start, because there is no dish or installation. Monthly prices depend on the provider and plan.
Does IPTV work without internet?
No. You need a stable connection of about 10 Mbps per screen for HD.
Can I keep my satellite dish and add IPTV?
Yes. Many homes use both: satellite on the main TV, IPTV on the other screens and phones.
